This was an exceptionally warm winter in Latvia, but just for a weekend in a small northern part of the country winter had its 15 minutes of fame.

Each spring or whenever there's a lot of water around Soomaa National Park in Estonia turns into a giant paddling playground. It's the time when you can take your kayak outside of the bounds of the river and explore the plains or even forests. They call it the 5th season.

HYPNOPOMPIA - The State Between Sleep and Wakefulness
One of the most iconic landscapes of the Eastern European country of Latvia: its wetlands. Like the other two Baltic countries on the Baltic Sea (Lithuania and Estonia) much of the interior of the country is covered in marshes and swamps, a function of their position on the northern edge of the great East European Plain. These provide not only some of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries but also scenes of intense natural beauty.

Autumn is the perfect season to get your wanderlust juices flowing and get lost in the moody forests, camp along the winding rivers and capture the nature before it all turns grey. We did just that by roaming Gauja National Park in Latvia.

An unexpected run-in with Northern Lights while camping on the island of Saaremaa, Estonia in August 2016.
A Latvian folk song tells a story of a mind (portrayed by a horse) that has gone astray (lost in a dark night’s fog) and is brought back with a helping hand of God (symbolised by the Sun that pierces through the thick fog making it fall).
Captured in picturesque Latvian landscapes of Kurzeme and Vidzeme regions during the short Midsummer solstice nights.
Special thanks to Artis Gāga (www.artisgaga.com) for the soundtrack “Tumša nakte, zaļa zāle”.

Noctilucent clouds are tenuous cloud-like phenomena that is made of ice crystals and is visible in a deep twilight. They are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere. Noctilucent clouds are not fully understood and are a recently discovered meteorological phenomenon; there is no record of their observation before 1885.
This show was captured in mid July over the valley of river Gauja in Gauja National Park, Latvia.

As spring hits the market lake Kaņieris comes to life. We spent a week living, listening and filming on and around the lake to witness nature's annual singing festival.
Lake Kaņieris is one of the richest lakes in Latvia in terms of bird and fish stocks. The historical significance of the lake for birds can be seen in its name – the Liv word “Kaņieris” originally meant “Goose Lake”. It formed as an ancient sea lagoon left inland, which remained here after deviation of the Lithorina sea. Over the course of time, the lake has experienced significant changes - it was drained several times and flooded, renewed in 1965 and since that time it is being maintained with help of sluices. More than ten islands are located here, six of which have been artificially created before renewal of the water level of the lake. The lake’s fish stocks are replenished each year, not only artificially, but also by allowing the fish to enter the lake from the sea with the help of a floodgate. Twice a year sea fish head up the river or Venta for breeding. On their path they need to cross a 240-meter wide natural rapid which is the widest in Europe – Venta Rapid in the city of Kuldīga in Latvia. Due to this, Kuldīga became famous as a "place where they catch fish in the air".

In the days of yore, the Devil gathered stones to build a bridge to Sāmsala (Saaremaa). He decided to heap the sea with stones. The Devil put the stones into a large sack, but, as the sack was very heavy, it tore apart and the stones fell out in the direction of the Devil's run. There is still no road to Saaremaa, and the Devil still cannot get to it. Yet at the beginning of the 20th century older people warned their children to behave themselves calmly and quietly at the stones.
On a more scientific note, Kaltenes Kalvas (Kaltene Stone Ridges) are large ridge-like stone formations in the forest approximately 1,5 km from Kaltene seashore. Such stone formations are not found near any other parts of the Latvian seashore. Geologists believe they have formed several thousand years ago, when the Baltic ice lake retreated from this region.

As summer comes to an end, nights become chilly and mornings rise wrapped in a blanket of mist.
Equipped with a sleeping bag and a camera I spent three nights on a trail that meanders through a maze of swamp pools in the moorland of Ķemeri to celebrate the change of seasons.
